Inaugural Issue: Language, Identity, and the Social Fabric

The Editorial Board is proud to launch the first issue of the Journal of Language & Society (JLS). This inaugural volume arrives at a critical juncture in sociolinguistic history, where the forces of digital globalization and mass migration are rapidly reshaping how human speech communities interact, evolve, and survive.

This issue, titled "Language, Identity, and the Social Fabric," focuses on the dual nature of language as both a tool for institutional power and a medium for personal identity. From the macro-level analysis of state language policies to the micro-level study of urban code-switching, the articles presented here explore how our linguistic choices define our place in a multicultural world.

Key Themes in this Issue:

  • Language Policy: Evaluating the institutional frameworks that protect or marginalize minority speech.

  • Urban Sociolinguistics: Investigating the "hybrid" languages emerging in multicultural metropolises.

  • Linguistic Equity: Exploring language as a fundamental human right in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

  • Identity Performance: Analyzing how speakers switch between dialects to navigate social hierarchies.

We invite scholars and practitioners to engage with these findings as JLS begins its mission to bridge the gap between theoretical linguistics and societal progress.
